Work is Like Play? Really?

The 3 Characteristics of Smart Liquor Store Owners

Tasting Events

Tasting Events (when customers sample liquor and wine in the store) are an easy way to create a "neighborhood feeling" while increasing traffic and sales. Best of all, distributors pay the costs. We have found that a well-planned Tasting Event brings in new customers, and an uptick in sales, for weeks afterwards. Posted below are photos from some of our Tasting Events.

Work is Like Play? Really?

Okay, work is work. But some businesses are better than others at energizing and engaging you. We truly enjoy making money and having fun at our Liquor Stores. We'll miss it when we retire. Whether we're working with customers, employees or salespeople, it's truly a nice environment. We especially enjoy the thrill of having the store full to capacity, cash register ringing non-stop, during our busiest days.

Characteristics of Smart Liquor Store Owners

During the past 15 years in this business, we have observed styles of liquor store management. Owners come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, but there are characteristics that SUCCESSFUL ones have in common. We have distilled (pun intended) those into a list, below. Do you have, or can you acquire, these skills and characteristics?

# 1 - Business Savvy

  • Understand your financials and how they translate to your business.
  • Be firm and decisive when negotiating pricing with all your distributors. Price your products so that they are highly competitive, but don't try to be the cheapest store in town. Focus on providing a comfortable, neighborly shopping experience with COMPETITIVE prices.

# 2 - Product Knowledge

  • You don't have to taste all the booze in your store (and you shouldn't try.) You and your staff do need to know what the products taste like, so you can assist customers and upsell products.
  • Act like an expert, and over time, you will become one. Read the labels on the bottles. Keep a bartender's recipe book handy. Maintain a file of tasting notes; you get them free from distributors.
  • Read the trade journals. Attend the distributors free trade shows. The networking and product knowledge are invaluable.

# 3 - People Skills

  • Every day, expect the best -- from yourself, your customers and employees. Hopefully, you are attracted to retail because you generally like people. If you expect to be disappointed, you will be.
  • Train your staff to cheerfully acknowledge every customer who enters (and exits) the store. This means looking them in the eye and providing a friendly greeting, such as "Hello" and "Goodbye; thanks".
  • Be tactful. Leave your politics a mystery. Never "kiss and tell". It is inappropriate to gossip about your customers, no matter how innocuous the off-hand comment may seem.

Should I buy an existing store or start a new one?

The U.S. Small Business Administration says 95% of NEW businesses fail in year one. Why take that chance? With our stores, you will know what to expect. You will generate sales the first day. Everything is ready for you, so you can focus on building the business.

Starting a NEW business is wickedly stressful, with unexpected costs and frustration. We went through all that drama, so that you don't have to!

You can feel confident about buying our Liquor Stores. Of course, you will go through a due diligence process. Trust your instincts. It's actually simple. All you have to do is continue and build upon what's already here. How far you grow the business is up to you.

Daniels Parkway Corridor

The Daniels Parkway Corridor is arguably the #1, best location for retail stores in Lee County. The Corridor is where most everyone wants to live. A multitude of lush golf courses and high-end country club communities cluster here.

The store is located on Daniels Parkway, the busiest east/west thoroughfare in the city. It is also one of the region's busiest access roads for Interstate 75.

More than gated luxury communities and diverse shopping, the Corridor is also home to SW Florida International Airport, and the Lee County Sports Complex. The airport boasts 8 million passengers annually, bringing customers from around the globe to our Liquor Stores. The Lee County Sports Complex offers numerous events, often sold out, including the Minnesota Twins Spring Training games. The wildly-popular Boston Red Sox also hold Spring Training in Fort Myers. The Red Sox are building their new sports complex close by.

How do I finance the purchase?

In this economy, banks are the LAST place to go for financing. It doesn't matter whether your credit score is close to perfect. It doesn't matter how well liquor is selling, in spite (or because of) the economy. Banks have zero tolerance for risk. The best way to finance your purchase is to take a mortgage on your home or other real property. If you can, borrow from relatives or friends through a promissory note.
